Introduction

English is thought to be one of the most important languages in the world. There are many reasons why English is so important. One of the reasons is that English is spoken as the first language in many countries. There are 104 countries where English is spoken as the first language.

Although English is the language of so many countries, more people in the world speak Mandarin Chinese as their first language. Mandarin Chinese is spoken in sixteen countries.

Even in countries where English is not the native language, people use it for business and tourism. English is used for these purposes in most countries. English is considered the business language. English is the official language of the United Nations. English is also the official language of airlines and airports. All airline pilots that fly to other countries must be able to speak English.

There are different kinds of English like British English, Canadian English and American English. These are not separate languages. They are dialects. A dialect is the way people in a particular place speak their native language. In one place, people might have a name they like to use for something that is not used in another place. For example: In Britain, they call the building where a motion picture is watched a cinema. In America, they call it a theater. This is just a different way of talking about the same thing. Both of the words cinema and theater are English words, and can be used to describe a building where motion pictures are watched, so both of these words are correct. It is important to remember that any form of English that you learn is good. There are no better versions of English. There are only different ones.

Nature Of English Language

English is a varied language that has absorbed vocabulary from many languages of the world. English is the most dynamic language of the world. Let us discuss the nature of English language
a. Receptive:
Receptiveness is regarded as an extraordinary nature of English language. It has maintained its open door policy. It has adopted and accepted thousands of words from European, Asian, African, Indian, Japanese, Chinese and other languages. We can see a great impact on classical languages like Latin, Greek, Arabic, French and Sanskrit on English. English has the richest vocabulary due to its receptiveness (Kumari, 2014).

b. Heterogeneous:
As English contains vocabulary from many languages, it has become heterogeneous in
nature. In the process of adopting words from other languages, in some cases the original
words as it is without change in meaning, but in some other cases, the spelling, pronunciation and meaning of original words from other languages was changed for instance; the French word, ‘tour’ and the Latin word, ‘turris’ bacome ‘Tower’ in English (Kumari, 2014).

c. Systematic:
The system of English language functions through sounds, words and structures. The system of sound is known as phonology. The system of words is called as morphology whereas the system of structures is named as syntax. All these three systems are integrated with one another making an organic whole which is called as the English language.

Need Of English Language

English is relevant in India as a majority of the higher education books get printed in this language. It is the 3rd most spoken language across the world. In case you have to survive in the current cut-throat competition you must have impressive command in this language. Knowing English in the country today has become quite significant as it is utilized in a lot of fields more than any other language. If the Indian students need to compete with other students (both nationally and internationally), sound knowledge of the English Language is prerequisite.

Importance Of English Language

It’s easy to see just how important English is around the world. Many international businesses conduct meetings in English, universities teach courses in English and, around the world, tourists and travellers use English as a common language.

But how did English become so important? Well, it all goes back to the British Empire, which at its peak covered 25% of the earth’s surface. During colonial times, British rulers often obliged the people in those countries to speak English rather than their native language. Although the origins of English as a global language has a complicated past, the language has left an important mark on media, trade and business. If you’re still not sure about whether to learn the language, then check out the reasons below.

1. English is a global language

English is the most commonly spoken language in the world. One out of five people can speak or at least understand English!

2. Studying English can help you get a job

English is the language of science, aviation, computers, diplomacy, and tourism. Knowing English increases your chances of getting a good job in a multinational company within your home country or of finding work abroad.

Need Grammar in English Language

Correct grammar is your key to speaking English fluently and confidently. Knowing your grammar will help you avoid errors that make your English sound strange to native speakers.

But there are certain situations in which English grammar is especially important. For example, if you’re going for a job interview in an English-speaking country, the employer will be interested in the quality of your spoken and written English. In fact, in a recent survey of U.K. job recruiters, 50% said that bad spelling and grammar was the biggest reason they would dislike an application.

Correct grammar won’t just demonstrate your English skills—it’ll also show that you’re diligent and have an eye for detail.

This is equally important if you’re aiming to study abroad. Colleges and universities are likely to assess your academic English based largely on your knowledge of English grammar.

Grammar is even important for your social life. Did you know that people on online dating apps are 14% less likely to chat with someone who uses poor grammar? Plus, when you’re meeting new people or visiting new places, the last thing you want is to be misunderstood! To avoid confusing your friends, or even ordering more drinks than you intended, you need to have a firm idea of how to structure your words

Present Tense

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines present tense as “the tense of a verb that expresses action or state in the present time and is used of what occurs or is true at the time of speaking and of what is habitual or characteristic or is always or necessarily true, that is sometimes used to refer to action in the past, and that is sometimes used for future events.” According to the Oxford Learner’s Dictionary, the present tense is “the form of a verb that expresses an action that is happening now or at the time of speaking.” The Cambridge Dictionary defines present tense as “the form of the verb that is used to show what happens or exists now.”

Continuous Tense

There are three main types of tenses, i.e. presentpast and future. Now, these three main tenses are subcategorised into four different tenses depending on how the verb is used in the sentence. One such subcategory is the continuous tense. What does one understand by the word continuous? Continuous means in action, i.e. the action/event is or was or will be going on at a particular time. This article will help one understand the three different types of continuous tenses with examples.

As we all know, the present tense denotes those actions which are already in motion or are practised habitually by someone. For example, “I go to school.” Here, ‘go’ is an example of the present tense verb. Present continuous tense denotes actions/events that are already in progress while we speak about them.

  • Children are going to school.
  • The boys are playing in the park.
  • The baby is crying out loud.
  • It is raining now.
  • am cooking pasta for lunch.
  • Miss Peters is teaching the class.
Past Continuous Tense

The past continuous tense, also known as the past progressive tense, describes ongoing actions in the past, such as I was writing my research paper all night. It uses the same construction as the present continuous tense except with the past tense of the verb to be.

What separates the past continuous tense from the past perfect continuous tense or even the simple past tense? Below, we take a deep dive into the past continuous tense, go over all the rules and uses, and give plenty of past continuous tense examples.

The past continuous tense shows a continuous action that began in the past. It is the past tense version of the present continuous, which also describes ongoing actions. The present and past continuous are very similar, but the past continuous uses was and were, the past tense of to be.

Future Continuous Tense

The future continuous tense is generally used to represent an event or action that is happening at a certain point in time in the future. The tense is also called the future progressive tense, as it denotes an action or event that is progressing or continuing at a particular time in the future.

Have a look at how different dictionaries define the future continuous tense in order to have a much better idea of what it is.

Definition of the Future Continuous Tense

The future continuous tense, according to the Cambridge Dictionary, is defined as a tense that is used to “refer to temporary actions and events that will be in progress at a particular time in the future.” According to the Collins Dictionary, the future continuous tense is used “to suggest that something is about to happen or will happen at some time that is not clear or precise.”

Perfect Tense

Perfect tense falls under the four subcategories of tenses in English. Perfect tense talks about those actions that are already done/completed when we are speaking about them. For example, “Ira had gone to the movies.” Here, ‘had gone’ refers to the fact that Ira already went to the movies in the past, and the action is already completed while we are speaking about it. Let’s have a look at the three types of perfect tenses with examples on the basis of their time of completion.

Present perfect tense refers to activities that are already done/completed in the immediate past, i.e. just finished/completed. It can be formed in the following way:

Subject + Have/Has + Past participle form of the verb + the rest of the sentence

Examples of present perfect tense are as follows.

  • Raj has just gone out to the market.
  • The clock has just struck twelve.
  • We have gone for a walk.
  • Toby has eaten all the cookies. (i.e. none is left for you to eat)
  • My mother has cut her finger. (i.e. now it’s bleeding)
  • have done all my homework.

Past Perfect Tense

You would have definitely learnt how to use the simple past tense and the past continuous tense to speak about the actions that happened or were taking place in the past. Well, there is another tense called the past perfect tense which allows you to compare and contrast different actions, times and events in the past. In this article, you will learn everything about the past perfect tense, its meaning, definition, structure, formula and uses along with examples to help you understand well. Check out the topics given below to have an in-depth analysis of the same.

The past perfect tense is slightly different in its structure and use in a sentence from the simple past tense and the past continuous tense. The past perfect tense clearly states that one action took place before another action in the past. It can also be said that the past perfect tense represents a past action that took place in the past. Now, take a look at the definitions of the past perfect tense given by various dictionaries.
